LLHC Devotional: Dealing with Pride

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

James 4:6, NRSV

“The Lord’s mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.”

Luke 1:50-52

“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Luke 14:11

It’s not bad to feel proud of what you have accomplished, or proud of your family or friends. It’s not bad to take pride in your work, or to feel proud of your ancestry or identity. When scripture talks about pride or any other quality that focuses our attention inward rather than outward, context matters. What we are proud of and how that pride manifests matters: when pride in our work or accomplishments turns into all-encompassing egotism, or when pride in home or appearance becomes vanity, then pride is a problem. When feeding our pride becomes more important than feeding our hungry neighbors, we are at risk of putting our pride before our relationship with God, before our calling as Christians. Humility is the virtue lifted up to us in scripture, and humility is the virtue toward which we strive. Turning our gaze outward toward others and seeking ways to serve the needs of our communities, following the example of Jesus, is a tried and true way to keep pride in check.

ON THE HUNT TO MEND THE HEART

In the first ever Easter Turkey Harvest, the Lazy Lab Hunting Club hosted a total of twenty-four veterans, active-duty personnel, and their dependents in perhaps the most impactful outdoor therapy opportunity we’ve accomplished yet! Not only were awardees able to harvest, as shown in the image below, but the fellowship and mending that occurred proved to be at the heart of the matter. Thank you so much to the following personnel for making this year’s event such a memorable and impactful experience: LLHC Chairman/Cofounder, Mr. David Desrosiers. LLHC Board Member, Ms. Nicole Amelio-Casper M.A. LLHC Volunteer, Mr. Joshua Arnett. LLHC Team Member, Mr. David Goodman. SALUTE TO OUR CHAIRMAN

What a weekend it was for the Lazy Lab Hunting Club! This year, we conducted the Inaugural Easter Turkey Harvest in Six Mile, South Carolina, providing an amazing weekend of turkey hunting for two American US Army Veterans. This event not only was a weekend for the veterans, but their families were also invited to share in the love and fellowship. In all, twenty-four members of the military community (active-duty personnel, veterans, and their dependents) took part in our festivities and Easter celebration. Additionally, the Easter Turkey Harvest could not have been accomplished without the guidance of our Chairman and Cofounder, Mr. David Desrosiers. He and LLHC Volunteer, Mr. Joshua Arnett, built and led an experience that no one in attendance will ever forget due to its impactful nature. If you’d like to learn more about the LLHC and our commitment to American service members, please head to https://mendtheheart.org. Also, you can help us continue to be on the hunt to mend the heart by providing your tax-deductible donation by heading to https://lnkd.in/gVitZh8. God bless, y’all, and FIGHT ON! *** OUTDOOR THERAPY IS REAL AND ARGUABLY ONE OF THE GREATEST ASSETS AVAILABLE TO SOOTH THE SOUL ***

Recently, I had the absolute pleasure to participate in the Lazy Lab Hunting Club‘s Salute to Women Service Members. During that time, I had the privilege of befriending USMC Marine Lisa Bodenburg. Lisa was nominated to be an awardee of the LLHC’s outdoor therapy program in which the emphasis is not on the harvest but rather on fellowship and community. It is our hope that those selected to participate on our events get to share in the immense beauty of the great outdoors and are overwhelmed by the understanding that the LLHC cares tremendously about the service member’s health and mental wellness. By the looks of it, I’d say Lisa truly enjoyed the camaraderie of friends such as LLHC Liaisons Shane Luttrell and Mark Gular as well as the picturesque environment in which the hunt took place. If you’d like to learn more about the LLHC, please head to lazylabhc.org. If you’d like to help us continue to be on the hunt to mend the heart, please head to lazylabhc.org/give/ to provide your tax-deductible donation.
